The activities permitted in Wilderness Parks have always been restricted to hiking, canoeing and low impact camping. Motorized vehicles, sport hunting, logging and mining have historically been forbidden in these roadless sanctuaries.
> On February 4, 2000, Earthroots obtained a leaked government document revealing a commitment made by the Ministry of Natural Resources to open wilderness parks to sport hunting.
> Hunting may be permitted in any of the province's 8 Wilderness Parks where there is 'demonstrated' local support for it.
> Local consultations and the subsequent debate will occur when each park management plan comes up for review. (Park Management Plans are supposed to be reviewed every 5 years).
>The Killarney Provincial Park Management Plan is up for review this year. Canada's famous Group of Seven artists were inspired by the scenery of Killarney. Their love for the region made them lobby the government to preserve Killarney as a Wilderness Park: 48,5000 hectares of pristine wilderness
To get involved: phone or write the Park Office and ask to be put on the management mailing list:

Opening wilderness sanctuaries to hunters undermines the principles the parks were established to fulfill. |
